Atrin Madani

Atrin Madani

A voice that stays. A presence that reaches far beyond the jazz club. Atrin Madani belongs to a new generation of artists who understand jazz not as the past, but as music for today.

From Berlin, his path leads him onto the great stages — with a voice full of elegance and warmth, a natural closeness to the audience, and the aim of making jazz what it can be again: music for everyone.

Jazz for people.

All about Atrin

Atrin Madani is one of the most exciting voices of a new generation of jazz. Born and raised in Berlin as the son of Iranian immigrants, he combines musical tradition with a natural openness to the present. His warm, distinctive voice, his sense for great songs and his immediate closeness to the audience have long carried him far beyond the Berlin jazz scene.

With his 2023 debut album Where Are We Now?, nominated for the German Jazz Prize as “Debut Album of the Year”, Madani drew attention beyond his home scene for the first time. On the album, generations and genres meet: songs by David Bowie, Steely Dan and Nick Drake stand alongside other formative pieces from his musical upbringing – connected by a very personal idea of what jazz can be today.

Musically, Madani grew up with the great singers: Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, Andy Williams and Tony Bennett shaped his idea of phrasing, elegance and storytelling. But instead of reproducing their past, he looks for what this tradition can mean today. Songs by David Bowie, Steely Dan, Michael Franks, Coldplay or Nick Drake find their place in his repertoire just as naturally.

Meanwhile this path takes him from intimate jazz clubs onto some of the great concert stages. Madani sings with big bands and orchestras, has been a guest of the Deutsche Oper Berlin Big Band and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, and in 2025 appeared at Classic Open Air on Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt as support for Gregory Porter before nearly 6,000 people. With “Remembering Roger” he also shares the stage with Roger Cicero’s original big band and its long-time musical director and arranger Lutz Krajenski – not as an imitation, but as a new voice carrying Cicero’s musical legacy into the present. Concerts increasingly take Madani beyond Germany as well.

For all his musical versatility, the core remains the same: Madani does not want to make music for a small circle of insiders. For him, jazz begins where a song tells a story and something emerges between the stage and the audience.

“In jazz we often try to make too much art and forget that the greatest art can lie in touching people.”

Perhaps Atrin Madani’s understanding of music can therefore be summed up most simply in three words:

Jazz for people.

Atrin Madani & Band

With his band, Atrin Madani brings jazz to the stage that connects great tradition with the present. Together with outstanding musicians from the European jazz scene, the Berlin singer creates a sound that is elegant and timeless – and at the same time immediate and full of joy in playing.

At the centre are Madani’s own compositions and his very personal way of storytelling. Selected songs by artists such as David Bowie, Steely Dan or Nick Cave also find their way into the repertoire – music that at first seems far outside classic jazz and finds a new language in the hands of the band.

Every concert lives from the interplay of the musicians. There is room for improvisation and spontaneous moments without losing sight of a song’s story. Madani’s warm voice and natural connection to the audience stand in dialogue with a band whose members bring their own musical handwriting.

Night after night, a concert emerges that works just as well in an intimate jazz club as on a large festival stage: sophisticated, entertaining and open to an audience far beyond the borders of jazz.
